In early May 2014, a few sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) were spotted spawning in a constructed riffle we built at the State Hospital Dam removal site in Taunton, MA. Upon closer look, there were 36 redds in the channel and other lamprey actively building redds and spawning. We were pretty excited about this – it was less than two years ago that the 1818-built State Hospital Dam was removed, allowing sea lamprey to migrate upriver for the first time in nearly 200 years.
