Position Description

We are seeking a staff scientist with expertise in a discipline of aquatic restoration to join our team. The ideal candidate will have education and experience in fluvial geomorphology. The candidate should have a firm understanding of river and wetland ecosystem processes and be able to assist in various aspects of data collection, analysis, design, implementation, and project management of river, estuarine, and wetland restoration projects.

Location: Rehoboth Beach, DE

Work Schedule

This position will be based out of the Rehoboth Beach, DE area and will be a hybrid position with a blend of in-person, work from home, and field work.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a core water resources discipline.
  • 2 or more years of relevant work experience or Master’s degree.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Passion for aquatic ecosystem science and for restoration of aquatic systems.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively both as part of a team as well as independently.
  • Experience in one or more software programs used for analysis, communication, and design, including ArcGIS,  Autodesk Civil 3D, Excel, HEC-RAS, R.
  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse conditions across a variety of terrains and travel for projects for up to 7 days at a time.
  • Ability to practice self-reflection and continually seeks to advance communication skills.

Additional Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with dam removals, living shorelines and tidal systems.
  • Master’s degree and/or comparable experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with topographic or bathymetric surveying including with GPS RTK, Total Station, sonar, or UAV-based methods.
  • Experience with scientific field surveys and sampling techniques for rivers and wetlands.
  • Construction oversight or management experience.
  • Experience managing projects.
  • Understanding of issues of the environment from a non-white perspective (for example, Indigenous, Black, and/or Latinx relationships to water and place.)
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with the public and diverse stakeholder groups.

Essential Duties:

Essential duties will vary depending on experience level of the candidate, but may include the following:

  • Prepare reports for smaller projects or chapter-size elements in larger reports or work products.
  • Carries responsibility for design/completion of programs such as field investigations or numerical modeling.
  • Effectively manage short- and long-term workload to meet deadlines.
  • Contribute to or lead internal project design discussions and decisions.
  • Attend site visits and conducts field work, which may include aquatic habitat assessments, aquatic species surveys, topographic and bathymetric surveys, fish salvage efforts during construction, installation of data loggers, etc.
  • Participate in performance feedback discussions, seek out work, give and receive feedback.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
