Position Description

We are seeking a senior fluvial geomorphologist to join our team. The ideal candidate will have education and experience in fluvial geomorphology. The candidate must be able to manage projects and assist in various aspects of technical project work including data collection, analysis, design, and implementation of river, estuarine, and wetland restoration projects.

Location: Saint Paul, MN or Milwaukee, WI
Work Schedule

We currently operate on a hybrid schedule where employees are expected to be in the office at least 3 days a week, Monday – Friday. Employees may elect to work from home for up to 2 days a week, if and when job duties allow (e.g., field work and in person meetings take precedence.)

Required Qualifications
  • Postgraduate degree in fluvial geomorphology, and 10-15+ years of work experience in a position relevant to degree.
  • Commitment to equity and inclusion.
  • Passion for aquatic ecosystem health and restoration.
  • Experience completing technical elements of restoration project such as field work, data analysis, design computation, and construction observation.
  • Proven ability to critically evaluate river conditions and anthropogenic disturbances.
  • Excellent research skills and ability to use a combination of desktop analysis and field assessment to accurately characterize reach geomorphology and estimate reach geomorphic trajectory.
  • Experience working closely with ecologists, biologists, and water resources engineers to develop appropriate restoration treatment approaches that alter the trajectory of a system to meet project goals.
  • Experience managing multiple small to large-sized projects, including preparation and management of project scopes, schedules, and budgets from proposal submittal through project completion.
  • Experience building and leading teams to deliver projects, including meeting technical, schedule, and financial targets.
  • Excellent delegation skills and ability to communicate clear expectations to project teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and professionally with clients, teaming partners, the general public, and diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness and ability to travel for up to 7 days at a time. Typical travel is of shorter duration, but longer periods of travel may periodically be required.
  • Ability to effectively self-manage your time to balance multiple deadlines/commitments and to practice self-reflection.
Additional Desired Qualifications
  • Understanding of issues of the environment from a non-white perspective (for example, Indigenous, Black, and/or Latinx relationships to water and place.)
  • Experience leading the business development component of a new area of pursuit, such as a new client group, geographic area of work, or a new type of project.
  • Published work or contributions to the body of knowledge relevant to discipline.
Essential Duties
  • Project management tasks including:
    • Scope, schedule, and budget preparation.
    • Leading project teams and meeting technical, schedule and financial targets.
    • Delegating, and providing clear estimates of hours, deliverables, and timelines expected to be met.
    • Attending internal project management trainings.
  • Senior fluvial geomorphologist tasks including:
    • Leading large field data collection efforts that involve field survey, geomorphic assessment, and project identification
    • Performing advanced scientific analysis (such as – analyzing, characterizing, and synthesizing water, sediment, and wood regimes) and integrating analyses of the project team
    • Leading design discussions for large and complex projects and making design decisions with significant influence on the project
    • Leading and coordinating the preparation of large and complex reports and design sets.
  • Applies in-depth knowledge and expertise acquired through progressive experience to apply current principles and practices in the field of fluvial geomorphology.
  • Performs internal peer review of documents, analyses, and deliverables for quality assurance.
  • Leads the technical portion of proposal development for pursuits of all sizes.
  • Performs a business development role by representing Inter-Fluve at events (e.g., conferences, client events) and in direct marketing outreach to potential clients and teaming partners.
  • Works closely with other project managers and Regional Director to resolve schedule issues and other workload conflicts that may arise.
  • Works closely with Regional Director, Marketing Director, Project Managers, and Principals to stay efficiently engaged in project work and business development pursuits.
  • Participates in performance feedback discussions by giving and receiving feedback.
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
