Mark Pranckus

Senior Ecologist

Mark grew up in Wanatah, Indiana, a small town rooted in the history of the Grand Kankakee Marsh—a vast wetland that once spanned much of the region before it was drained and ditched for agriculture. This history left a lasting impression on Mark, who recalls how “you could still see and understand the wetlands and the impact of water management.” His early understanding of the complexities of landscape-scale changes deeply influenced his approach to ecological restoration. Mark views streams as integral parts of the landscape, not isolated elements. He approaches his work with a holistic perspective, integrating land, water, and aquatic life to develop comprehensive management and restoration strategies.

Mark’s interest in biology was sparked by a childhood spent exploring the wetlands, streams, and forests around his home. After earning his degree in biology, he relocated to Duluth, Minnesota, where he worked for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources on fisheries research while pursuing a master’s degree. His academic work focused on the impact of wood on macroinvertebrate populations in Minnesota streams.

A seasonal consulting position eventually turned into a 20+ year career focused on aquatic habitat restoration. Mark’s experience includes stream and bank stabilization, habitat enhancement, feasibility studies, watershed management, and landscape design. He has extensive construction experience, having played significant roles from design and design-build projects to construction oversight, restoration establishment, and maintenance. Mark joined Inter-Fluve in 2024 to concentrate on stream restoration projects, where he enjoys tackling aquatic habitat challenges for a variety of clients. Outside of work, you can find him hiking, fishing, camping, and kayaking.
